While most of us are sidelined because of cold temperatures, tennis professionals head to the other side of the world where it is summer. The first grand slam of the year is the Australian Open. Held in Melbourne, Australia, the championship starts in mid January and is one of the most exciting slams of the year. It does not have the tradition of the other three (French Open, Wimbledon, US Open), but it is the most fun to watch, especially for those who only watch tennis occasionally. Every slam has its unique qualities and the Australian Open is a very dramatic one.
Even though the Australian Open is on air about the same time as everyone in the US is asleep, dedicated viewers can catch the end of good matches before going to work. Also the internet replays matches and ESPN’s regular coverage should repeat during the day. Enjoy!
