Team USA continued its winning ways outside of pool play on Tuesday when they completely dominated Canada. They beat Canada 91-48 and even though they beat the team by almost 50 points they were more happy about the 48 points they held them to defensively. Again the 2012 team’s goal has been trending all over twitter as #OperationGold.
Operation Gold will have its toughest match-up today as the USA women play Australia. Team USA has been led by different players stepping up each game and the duo of Tina Charles and Diana Taurasi have been unstoppable. Angel McCoughtry has been the ignition for getting offensive runs started once the offense becomes stagnant and is unstoppable scoring the basketball. With that talent and Team USA’s ability to dominate on defense as well as offense, Operation Gold will be carried out.
Australia does have counter attack against Operation Gold and it will go through the awesome duo of Lauren Jackson and Elizabeth Cambage. Jackson is the Olympics’ all-time scoring leader and Cambage is the first female to dunk in an Olympic game. Neither one of these records mean as much to these ladies as winning the Gold. So tomorrow they will be determined and extremely motivated to beat the team that took Gold away from them four years ago.
With all that being said, in single game elimination, anything can happen. In tomorrow’s game, Australia needs something amazing to happen. Amazing meaning having Penny Taylor healthy and in the line-up. Australia does not have a player to ignite a run like Taylor can. Taylor is the X factor needed for Australia to pull the upset tomorrow and that’s not going to happen.
Team USA has their X-Factor and she is primed and ready to prove just how much she belongs on the team. With experience under her belt and the ability to make something out of nothing on the court, McCoughtry will help keep Operation Gold from being defeated.
