College softball boasts just over 1,600 programs across the country, according to College Sport Scholarships. If each of those teams had a 20-women roster, that translates to about 32,000 women playing the sport, but just 80 spots are available in National Pro Fastpitch, America’s professional softball league.
After softball was voted out of the Olympics in 2005, today a professional league of four teams clings to life as one of the only higher-level accolades in the sport for women. The financial responsibility of sponsoring a team makes it difficult to support a bigger league. But all of that won’t stop those 80 women from lacing up their cleats as they get ready to kick off their 44-game season in June.
