Team USA started the game as if they had just landed on foreign soil. Whether it was the time difference or just tired legs, the shots didn’t fall and they found themselves down 21-9 early in the first quarter. Which player would step up for the star-studded team? How about Maya Moore, the youngest player on the team. The team landed in Great Britain on Tuesday, and she showed no jet lag. Her jets were running as she ignited a spark that sent the women on a 15-0 run, and Tina Charles finished it off with a jump hook in the paint. Maya Moore was in true form under her college coach finishing with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Team USA dominated after the first quarter run, but this was a great test for them to get acclimated to playing in Europe. Great Britain plays a Princeton style offense with a lot of movement and cutting to the basket. This style of play is what the U.S. team should expect throughout Olympic play.
Great team win and congrats to Maya Moore on player of the game!
The young guns in the backcourt, Maya Moore and Angel McCoughtry, are going to be the sparks that the U.S. women need whenever the team has a slow start or tired legs. That, my friends, is not a bad duo to have to make things happen. I love the aggressiveness they both play with, and I love this Game.
